Sexual Assault Prevention Strategic Plan (SAPSP)

UNI created a plan to develop, support and sustain an innovative, quality and successful framework for addressing sexual misconduct prevention in a consistent, collaborative and effective manner in order to reduce the risk of sexual misconduct throughout the university.

Below is a list of specific strategies OCEM has done and/or is doing in areas of campus education, communication and climate to prevent sexual assault.

Strategy 1: Campus Education

Goal: Advance consistent multi-tiered prevention education strategies to end sexual misconduct

Strategic Initiatives:

Introduce message about policy and resources at orientations of all students and employees
Provide mandatory education/trainings for all incoming students and employees, as well as advanced multi-tiered education in subsequent years
Build bystander/upstander intervention skills in freshmen and transfer students by integrating intervention programming into the first-year experience
Reinforce concepts through voluntary follow-up workshops and peer educator programs
Encourage faculty members to incorporate educational opportunities in classrooms
Infuse bystander/upstander intervention skills into curriculum and professional readiness programs for all students across all majors
Build healthy relationship skills in students by addressing healthy relationship behavior, consent and boundary setting, and how to help others
Empower student athletes through education and involvement to effect positive culture change within their teams and across campus
Empower students living in residence halls with opportunities to reinforce positive norms and build skills related to bystander/upstander intervention and healthy sexuality
Provide Greek organizations ally training that addresses sexual violence, bystander/upstander intervention, rape culture, and impacts of trauma
Ensure ownership and accountability through ongoing training and development opportunities for decision makers and others involved in the university response to sexual misconduct
Empower employees and supervisors to address issues of harassment and bullying in the workplace
Partner with the Center for Violence Prevention to support and provide leadership, education, training, and evaluation to school systems and communities on topics of bullying and gender violence prevention
Support and provide leadership, education, training, and evaluation to community organizations on topics of gender violence prevention

Current Programs:

Green Dot: Green Dot is an NISG-sponsored bystander intervention program focused on gender violence prevention. The goal of Green Dot is to decrease the likelihood of sexual assault, stalking, dating and domestic abuse.

Strategy 2: Campus Communication & Awareness

Goal: Develop consistent and strategic message(s) to be used throughout all related activities to reinforce campus education efforts, to aid in building awareness, and to address the prevention of sexual misconduct at UNI

Strategic Initiatives:

Compile an overview of all current initiatives to identify areas of need, potential for further collaboration, and possible overlap while using existing efforts for further enhancement and collaboration
Develop process for organizations wishing to introduce and/or lead strategies using campus resources to ensure that new initiatives align with strategic plan and are evaluated for effectiveness
Develop campaign to focus on promoting key messages, phrasing, and graphic identity to be incorporated throughout all strategic efforts
Build awareness by establishing a visible, sustained, and coordinated year-round communication strategy incorporating awareness activities, proactive messaging from leadership, and timely feedback/responses to incidents
Enhance availability of resources and on-demand information including web presence, providing quick access to campus prevention and awareness efforts
Use social media and campus technology to address norms related to sexual violence, gender, and sexuality, as well as to promote events and awareness activities
Track data and compile annual report to review results of all initiatives and make necessary adjustments, reviewing trends and progress over time

Current Programs:

The Art of C.H.A.N.G.E.: An annual exhibition that takes place during the fall semester. The goal of this exhibition is to give survivors and supporters a space to share their creative work concerning sexual assault stigmas and myths, and to continue awareness and prevention efforts at UNI.
What Were You Wearing?: An annual exhibit that takes place during April and displays replications of outfits from stories of current students, alumni and current faculty/staff survivors.

Strategy 3: Campus Climate

Goal: Perform regular assessment of campus climate relating to sexual misconduct in order to assess needs, track trends and measure success of prevention efforts.

Strategic Initiatives:

Conduct climate survey on biennial basis
Supplement quantitative data with qualitative data during off-years
Monitor data from online training program to measure changes and trends
Use data to continually update education, awareness and prevention efforts
Disseminate climate data to campus through educational programs and effective communication strategies
